What is PlanetSide? PlanetSide is a MMOFPS (Massive Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter) computer game created by Sony Online Entertainment that connects literally thousands of players in a great and ever changing war. Three factions (known as empires in-game) fight for control of ten different diverse worlds each with its own unique weather patterns and backdrops. Players control a soldier in one of these three factions helping to aid and benefit their team. You can view our "Which Side are you on? Factions and Empires" article for more information about each faction. The beauty of PlanetSide lies in its size and the ability of players to certify in many different aspects of the game. Not sure what I'm talking about? No worries, Our PlanetSide Info menu will be explaining everything you need to know about this game to get you started. The game utilizes a 100% PvP (Player Versus Player) system. What that means is that there are absolutely no computer controlled characters or NPCs (Non-Playable (Player) Characters). Every friend you aid or enemy you shoot are all controlled by other real life breathing and thinking human beings. This makes for one wild ride! PlanetSide uses a leveling system like a lot of RPG (Role-Playing Game) type games out there. Sound weird right? Well it's actually rather easy to explain. Experience, known as Battle Experience Points or BEP for short is awarded to players for doing deeds within their chosen empire (or faction). For example, taking over a base from enemy control and converting it to your empire's control awards experience points or BEP for the player. Killing an enemy soldier or even helping other players in your empire also award you with experience. We go into more details about BEP, leveling up, as well as different kinds of experience that can be had in our "Experience Broken Down" article. For now this is just an overview of the game. The game is a bit dated having first been released on May 20th, 2003, but it remains one of the most enjoyable gaming experiences around. There simply isn't another game like it right now. Imagine Halo or Call of Duty with a team of thousands instead of just a few. The battle grounds are huge and non-linear meaning you can move freely around the entire world map. If you can see it chances are you can get there. And you can certify in so many different aspects of the game that at one moment you could snipe from 300 meters away and the next you could go up close and personal with heavy weapons. Heck you can fly assault aircraft and rain hellfire on your enemies from above or you can drive a tank and help push your ground forces forward. The limitation is your imagination. But don't take our word for it. If a picture speaks a thousand words then a video must speak millions. Let this video speak louder than words.
