What is Grief? Grief is a tracking system used by the game to ensure players aren't continuously killing other players in their own empire. How does grief affect me? The developers at SOE understand grief happens from time to time unintentionally, hell we'd be lying if we said we never killed a friendly accidentally. Everyone does it. How much you do it is the difference. Every time you damage a friendly you are given grief points. They eventually fade away with time. At first you will only be reminded not to shoot at friendly forces. This is called grief level 1 and is pretty common. Someone may have ran in front of you or you may have thought that was an enemy. Regardless, it's not a serious level. The second level is achieved via reaching 600 grief points. At this point a pop up window that must be acknowledged is displayed in the center of your screen. You will not be able to fire your weapon until you acknowledge the pop-up. If this happens to you, we suggest you seriously begin watching your fire and cease spam attacks if you're using them. The next level is usually as far as anyone gets because it is a total weapon's lock of your account. If you manage to work your way up to 1,000 grief points all characters on your account will be weapons locked, meaning you will not be able to fire your weapon until the timer runs out. Vehicle throttle speeds will be reduced to 5% so that you cannot run over friendly forces either. The thing to note about this lock is that it is calculated by game time. So if you happen to get a weapons lock for 30 minutes and you decide to logoff the game and come back in 30 minutes, guess what? You'll still have a 30 minute weapons lock timer. You must complete this timer in-game. The final grief level is grief level 4 which is an automatic three day suspension on your account. This grief level is achieved by reached 1,901 grief points. Honestly, if you work your way through all the Weapons Locks from 1,000 - 1,900 we personally think you should be banned. It's incredibly hard to pull off 1,901 grief points. If you did manage it somehow, it's because you meant to. Simple as that. Additional notes Don't be too worried about grief because it happens occasionally and is fine. As long as you're not actually trying to kill friendly forces then you shouldn't gain enough to seriously affect you. Just becareful. You should note spam weapons such as the weapons from the Special Assault certification as well as grenades and basically anything that has splash damage is easiest to incur grief points. If you are using such a weapon and find your grief is too high, chances are you need to pick up a new weapon or rethink how you fire it. Shooting a grenade into a group of friendlies because you thought you saw one enemy is a bad idea. Grief points are cumulative. Despite the SOE official site saying you gain grief on a one per one basis for each point of damage a friendly receives from you, this is not true. You gain more grief points based on the continuous damage over a short time. So for example, if I shoot you five times within 5 seconds, I'll gain more grief than if I shot you 5 times throughout five minutes. If you feel someone is griefing you intentionally and you wish to report them please visit our "Reports and Appeals" page for more information on how to do this and what you should know. | ||
